Sustainable housing: The report, Sustainable Housing: Today and Tomorrow, outlines the Housing Authority's plans for 'green' initiatives in the next four years. |

The Housing Authority has outlined its "green" initiatives and targets for the next four years in its second environmental, health and safety report.
The initiatives include extending the "waste separation at source" scheme to all estates by phases, reducing construction and demolition waste through the development of a waste index and identifying a pilot scheme in estates to test the reduction of flushing water consumption.
Meanwhile, quieter construction equipment and technology will be explored and construction specifications will be revised to adopt sustainable timber doors in pilot projects.
The report, Sustainable Housing: Today and Tomorrow, covered activities from April 1, 2004 to March 31 last year.
Efforts in enhancing neighbourhood development and instigating partnerships for promotion of environmental, health and safety awareness among business partners, staff, residents and the community are also discussed in the report.
For the first time, case studies have been included as examples of the authority's achievements in green estate management, sustainable planning and design as well as green-focused office management.
While continuing to strengthen environmental, health and safety performance, the authority will step up partnering with residents, business partners, green groups and maintain closer liaison with the Government, and the Council for Sustainable Development to promote a green, healthy and sustainable living environment for residents.
It will also pursue a range of practicable initiatives to address the social, economic and environmental needs of its tenants.
The report, which is only available electronically, can be viewed at www.housingauthority.gov.hk.
