A baby boy has become the first person with a meningococcal infection this year, the Centre for Health Protection says, reminding people to guard against the disease.
The four-month-old came down with a fever on Monday and was admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital in stable condition on Tuesday. He had not travelled recently and none of the people he lives with show symptoms.
The infection is caused by the meningococcus bacterium, and is transmitted by direct contact, including coughing and sneezing, with infected people. Incubation varies from two to 10 days, and is commonly three to four days.
Preventive measures
To prevent meningococcal infections:
* wash hands frequently, and observe good personal and environmental hygiene;
* avoid crowded places;
* avoid close contact with patients who have fever or severe headaches; and,
* cover nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing.
Travellers returning from endemic areas should consult their doctor promptly if they feel unwell.
People can visit the centre's website for general information about the disease, or visit the Travellers' Health Service website.
