The temporary ban on live poultry supplies from Guangdong is a preventive measure taken after assessing public health risks, Assistant Director of Food & Environmental Hygiene Rhonda Lo says.

 

In a meeting with the live poultry retail trade representatives today, Ms Lo said the three-week ban was made following the confirmation of a human case of H5N1 avian influenza in Guangzhou. The suspension will allow a comprehensive investigation.

  

Operators of live poultry retail outlets should strictly observe measures against avian influenza. These include thorough daily cleansing of poultry stalls and putting on proper protective gear when handling live poultry.

  

When inspecting these stalls, the department's staff will pay closer attention to the condition of chickens and any non-compliance of the protective measures imposed. Close contact with the trade will be maintained to keep them informed of the latest developments.
