Contact lens solution withdrawn

Department of Health

Sale of contact lens solution ReNu by Bausch & Lomb has been suspended, the Department of Health says, after fungal corneal infection cases, clinically known as keratitis, in Hong Kong and Singapore.

The department backed the company's move to withdraw the product, and discussed the infection situation with Singaporean health officials and other experts today. The Consumer Council was also consulted.

The Singapore government reported 39 recent cases, 34 of which involved the use of the product. In Hong Kong, the average number of fungal keratitis cases between June and January, based on the Hospital Authority's in-patient discharge records, was two to three per month. Of the 16 cases checked by the department, 12 involved the product.

The department is testing the solution and advised the company to solve the problem to protect consumers.
