An Oriental Magpie Robin found dead in Kam Shan Tsuen, Tai Po, is H5N1-positive, the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department says.
The department's acting Assistant Director Dr Thomas Sit said department staff collected the dead bird January 10 and inspected eight chicken farms in the area. There is no abnormal mortality and the chickens show no symptoms of avian influenza.
He said the species is common in Hong Kong, but there is no cause for panic as this is the first confirmed H5N1-positive case in 10,000 tests conducted over the past year.
Dr Sit reminded people to observe good personal hygiene and avoid contact with wild birds and live poultry.
Live poultry imports will remain normal, while surveillance at Mai Po will be stepped up.
