HA backs health reforms

Hospital Authority

The Hospital Authority has endorsed proposals laid out in the Health & Medical Development Advisory Committee's Building a Healthy Tomorrow discussion paper.

However, it also highlighted several areas of concern and pledged to work with the Government to mitigate them.

The authority will submit a detailed response to the Government by the end of the month.

Authority chairman Anthony Wu said: "In general, we welcome the policy directions and recommendations proposed. The importance placed on preventive and primary care and its emphasis on private sector involvement are considered appropriate and in line with international trend.

"However, concerns have been consistently expressed across the HA over the timing, logistics and resources required to put the recommendations into practice. A lot of detailed work would need to be done to address the healthcare financing options, staffing and training arrangements, infrastructural requirements and other implementation details for the specific proposals. The HA will work closely with the Government in the implementation of the proposals."
