Applications have opened under a funding scheme to acquire advanced Chinese screen readers and Braille displays that allow the blind to use the Internet. Application deadline is November 19.
The Social Welfare Department said the scheme, set up with a $7 million Jockey Club donation, supports non-government organisations and tertiary institutions, and people in need, to acquire the equipment.
Successful applicants will be provided with Chinese screen reader and Braille display. For individuals, the subsidy for Chinese screen reader will be capped at $9,800 and the one for Braille display will be 75% of the cost or $27,000, whichever is less.
The department has sent invites to eligible organisations to tender applications. Individual applicants must have a nomination from the department, subvented non-governmental rehabilitation organisations, tertiary institutions, secondary schools, or the Labour Department. They should submit the form with quotations of the concerned items by nominating organisations.
