Elderly financial security plan mooted

*

In view of the improving economic climate, it is time to explore and discuss a comprehensive financial security plan for the aged, Elderly Commission Chairman Dr Leong Che-hung says.

Speaking on a radio talk show today, Dr Leong said a considerable amount of resources have been allocated to elderly services, but there is still a lack of comprehensive financial security protection.

He said the Government's role is to provide a safety net for those in need and act as a facilitator to aid organisations in offering better services for the aged. But he called on the community to respect and care for the elderly more.

Dr Leong expressed concern over the service quality of homes for the aged, as there is a shortage of manpower in elderly care services. Apart from inspections, the Government should also promote self-regulation among service providers to improve service quality, he added.
