The Centre for Health Protection has taken measures to prevent H5 avian influenza in view of the recent human avian influenza cases in Indonesia.

Acting Consultant (Community Medicine) Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan today said the centre has been maintaining close contact with the World Health Organisation and the Consulate General of Indonesia to obtain more information on the situation in the country.

Dr Chuang said the Department of Health's Port Health Office has arranged broadcasting of health messages on board all in-bound flights from Indonesia. Health information leaflets are also being distributed to passengers leaving for the country.

To arouse awareness among Indonesians and other ethnic minorities in Hong Kong of the threat of avian influenza, publicity pamphlets in eight languages will be sent to relevant organisations for distribution among the target population, she said.

No case identified since 2004

The department will also approach the target groups to provide direct health advice and answer questions, Dr Chuang said, adding radio programmes for minorities will also be a channel to disseminate the health message.

The centre is also sending letters to all doctors in Hong Kong updating them about the latest avian flu situation and remind them to remain vigilant regarding the disease.

Doctors must notify the centre of any suspected case of avian influenza for prompt investigation and control measures.

Dr Chuang said as Hong Kong has surveillance systems and response mechanisms for human and animal influenza in place, no human bird flu cases have been identified since 2004.

Advice for travellers

Health information has been sent to the travel industry. The latest information and health advice on bird flu for travellers will be updated and available at the Hong Kong Travel Health Service Website.

Dr Chuang called on travellers going to Indonesia to remain vigilant and observe good personal hygiene.

They should avoid direct contact with poultry and birds, and if contacts have been made, they should wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water. Poultry and eggs should be thoroughly cooked before eating.

People who develop flu-like illnesses are also urged to seek medical consultations promptly. They should give their doctors details about their recent travel history.
