The Buildings Department urges flat owners and tenants to inspect and maintain their windows regularly, as there have been 15 cases of aluminium windows falling since June.
The department's Chief Structural Engineer Leung Siu-man said today officers have been sent to inspect all windows of the affected buildings. Although heavy rain will have some negative effects on window structure, Mr Leung said downpours are not the direct cause of the falls.
The department recorded over 40 falls last year, most attributable to improper maintenance. Noting the first batch of aluminium windows were installed in the 1980s, he said proper maintenance is essential to window safety.
He said there is nothing wrong with the design of aluminium windows, and the lifespan of a well-maintained one can be up to 20 years.
Owners and tenants should employ a qualified contractor to inspect and repair their windows if they do not open or close smoothly, or if there are any loose fixings. Bar hinges should also be cleaned and lubricated regularly. Do not handle any objects on the window sash or put pressure on it when cleaning windows.
