Sustainable development contest extended

Christine Fang
Brighter future: The Council for Sustainable Development's Education & Publicity Sub-committee Chairman Christine Fang says sustainable development cannot be achieved without public endorsement and support.

The Council for Sustainable Development has extended the deadline for its publicity design competition.

The competition requires entrants to design a poster, a booklet or an audio-visual presentation that will promote local awareness of sustainable development and encourage people to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives.

The Council's Education & Publicity Sub-committee Chairman Christine Fang said the competition aims to engage the community and further the public's understanding of sustainable development.

She said sustainable development is a relatively new concept in Hong Kong.

"When we talk about development, we are not just talking about economic growth, it is also about environmental protection and social harmony," she said.

"So, through this competition, we hope to engage more people to help us think how to put this concept into practice.

"We have organised this competition for different entry groups. People from the secondary schools, tertiary education and the general public can practice through studying the concept of sustainable development," she added.

It is hoped that using creative means to publicise sustainable development will help put this concept into practice, she added.

Ms Fang said the Council for Sustainable Development will use the winning entries for publicity purposes.

Entry deadline extended to June 14

To allow more people to participate, the Council has extended the entry deadline to June 14.

"I hope that more people can come and join us, because sustainable development cannot be achieved without public endorsement and support," Ms Fang said.

There will be three separate groups from which entries will be accepted:

* Secondary School - full-time secondary students;

* Tertiary Education - full-time tertiary education students; and

* Open - Hong Kong residents of at least 15 years of age (as of the date of submission).

Entrants may be individuals or teams.

Entrants are required to submit one of the following items:

* Audio-visual - a VHS tape, VCD or DV tape with an audio-visual production of a maximum of five minutes;

* Poster - A2 size; or

* Booklet - A5 size of not more than 20 pages.

Results of the competition will be announced in July, and there will be awards for distinction, merit, together with certificates of commendation in each of the entry categories.

Entries should be sent or delivered to: Council for Sustainable Development, c/o Sustainable Development Unit, M/F, Murray Building, Garden Road, Central, Hong Kong. Business hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5 pm, and Saturday, 9am to noon.

Copies of the information pamphlet and entry form are available at District Offices and public libraries. Details of the competition are also available from the Council for Sustainable Development's website.
