Tsunami victims to receive grants
*
Home Affairs Department

Family members of local tsunami victims will receive compassionate grants from this week, the Home Affairs Department says. A committee set up to manage the Incorporated Tsunamis Relief Fund 2004 has accepted most of the 28 applications.

A sum of $200,000 will be awarded to each victim. The successful applications involve a total grant of $4.8 million.

The fund was established with donations raised at an event at the Hong Kong Stadium on January 1. About $44 million was raised and to date, $37.5 million has been allocated to the five relief organisations which co-organised the event, for emergency relief operations in South Asia.

The rest of the donations were used for setting up the fund to provide a one-off compassionate financial assistance to family members of Hong Kong residents caught up in the disaster.

A final statement of accounts will be posted on the fund's website.
