Shellfish poisonings rise

HPC logo (Eng version)

The number of shellfish poisoning cases has risen to 26, affecting 45 people, the Centre for Health Protection says.

The 2575 1221 hotline offering health advice, has so far received 29 calls. Fifteen callers claimed they had nervous-system related symptoms after consuming scallops, and most recovered without seeking medical treatment.

The 18 male and 27 female patients, aged 11 to 81, developed symptoms like dizziness, limb weakness, blurred vision and cramps 20 minutes to three hours after consuming the same type of scallops between March 10 and 15.

The scallops were brought from 18 markets in Tuen Mun, Yuen Long, Sheung Shui, Tin Shui Wai, Chai Wan, Wan Chai, Wong Tai Sin, Mong Kok, Tseung Kwan O, Sha Tin and Tai Po.

All the 26 cases have been referred to the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department for follow-up action. The centre called on people to avoid eating fresh scallops for the time being and to seek medical advice if they develop symptoms.
