Demand pattern safe from high premiums: York Chow
*

Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr York Chow expects no change in demand for obstetrics and gynaecology services, despite concern over high insurance premiums for specialists.

Dr Chow told legislators today that any cessation of service provision by specialists, due to high professional indemnity insurance premiums, will not necessarily lead to a rise in demand for the services due to the large number of specialists in private practice. There are over 360 O&G specialists in Hong Kong, about two thirds practicing privately.

Dr Chow said the Academy of Medicine's College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology is forming a taskforce to assess the impact of the premium level on its members, such as their willingness to perform high-risk procedures. The Government will monitor the study and any changes in demand patterns for O&G services.
