Initial tests have confirmed the presence of red fire ants in Hong Kong. Deputy Director of Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Lau Sin-pang said a verbal reply today from Mainland experts positively identified the ant specimen submitted for examination.
Fire ant mounds were found in two Kowloon locations today, in the West Kowloon Cultural District area and a former bus terminal in Tai Kok Tsui. Pest control operations at the sites will be promptly conducted.
Fifteen mounds at the Sheung Yue River planting site and four within the Wetland Park were destroyed today. Some 187 mounds have been found so far. Government departments will continue inspections for the ants.
The Housing Department has mobilised more than 800 estate management staff to step up inspection of housing estates. Patrol teams will watch for any ant traces, and promptly deal with any found.
Notices have been posted at estate offices and announcements made to remind tenants to spray pesticides or ask for help from estate offices if they find the ants.
