A special task force has been set up to deal with red fire ants as suspected traces of the species have been found in Hong Kong Wetland Park, Tin Shui Wai.
Deputy Director of Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Lau Sin-pang said tonight that ants bearing features of Solenopsis invicta Buren were found in a vegetated area of the park this morning.
Samples have been taken for examination and the department is investigating the source of the ants and the time of their habitation. Department staff have started disinfecting the affected area.
A contingency plan has been drawn up to deal with the incident. Over 300 officers have been mobilised to patrol country parks and inspect local floral farms in the coming days.
A special treatment area in Ta Kwu Ling has been erected to inspect potted plants from the Mainland. Imported pot plants will be disinfected there, if necessary, before being sent to local farms.
Advisories issued
Farmers are advised to stay vigilant in monitoring pest conditions on their farms and report traces of red fire ants. They are advised to apply pesticide immediately should they find the ants.
Relevant departments which may source vegetation outside Hong Kong have been advised to check for any traces of the species.
Members of the public who identify suspected red fire ants in their plants should apply household pesticide.
Travellers are advised to examine imported plants carefully to ensure they are free from the pests. They should not bring in plants suspected to have red fire ants.
A long-term strategy is being worked out and the farming community will be informed of the updated pest control methods. The Health, Welfare & Food Bureau will closely monitor the development of the incident and review measures.
