The Centre for Health Protection warns travellers to the Philippines to avoid visiting crowded places following reports of meningococcaemia infections in Baguio City. They should wear surgical masks and minimise their visit when in the city.
Advice can be sought from the Port Health Travel Health Centre on 2575 1221. A vaccination is available conferring protection after one to two weeks.
The centre is maintaining liaison with the World Health Organisation and the Philippines' Ministry of Health on the latest situation. Filipino organisations in Hong Kong and the travel industry have been alerted and given advice on preventive measures. Health advice has also been broadcast in Tagalog on radio.
Travellers should avoid close contact with people who have fever or severe headache and should frequently wash their hands. Returning travellers should seek medical advice if they become ill, and tell doctors their recent travel history.
