Lifeguard salary review ready in November
*
Leisure & Cultural Services Department

The working group on temporary lifeguards' salaries will hire a consultant to study wage levels. The review will be completed in early November.

The Leisure & Cultural Services Department wrote to the Hong Kong & Kowloon Life Guard's Union today on topics discussed at the two working groups' first meetings.

The working group on temporary lifeguards' salaries agreed its terms of reference and considered factors determining salary levels during its first meeting on August 18.

The factors are qualifications required, whether the remuneration of beach and swimming pool lifeguards should be different, and responses to the recruitment exercise for temporary lifeguards in 2004.

Consultancy study independent

The working group suggested commissioning a consultant will be more ideal in respect of professionalism and independence, as well as acceptability and credibility.

The lifeguard establishment working group, which first met on August 13, has drawn up a visit schedule to each and every public swimming venue from mid-August to October. This will help establish basic principles and make recommendations on the lifeguard establishment at each venue.

The group may have an overseas study visit when necessary. It will compile a report with proposals on next year's lifeguard establishment in November.

The department urged the union to participate in the working groups and to air their views before August 27.
