Exhibition reveals book design trends

About 500 selected contemporary publications from the Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau revealing the current trends in Chinese book design are being showcased at the Heritage Museum until January 24 next year.

The exhibition, "Flip: Chinese Contemporary Book Design", aims to give the audience another dimension of reading by showing the sensuous experiences and enjoyment brought by modern book design.

Latest trends: Book designs by Hong Kong's Tommy Li, the Mainland's Lu Jingren and Taiwan's Zeng Rao Sheng are on display at the "Flip: Chinese Contemporary Book Design" exhibition.

Deputy Director of Leisure & Cultural Services Choi Suk-kuen said the items featured in the exhibition are all representative works that reflected the individual styles and effort of designers in the four regions.

"Some of the works on display are influenced by tradition, some incorporate both Chinese and Western concepts, not to mention the bold, innovative works which, together with the other works, present an impressive spectacle," she said.

Book design an artistic undertaking

"When one talks about book presentation today, it is not simply a concern about binding and layout, but the consideration of a unified work in which form and content complement each other. It is, in the simplest term, an artistic undertaking. Book designers play important roles in the production of a book."

Jointly presented by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department, Tsinghua University Department of Fine Art, and Shantou University Cheung Kong School of Design, the exhibition is the first programme of the museum's "Design Infinity" series.

Poster, fashion, product and interior design exhibitions will be run to enhance public understanding of the role of design in business activities here.
