The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed enterovirus-71 in a five-year-old boy, the 30th case this year.

It is classified as a local case as the boy has not travelled recently. He developed a hand rash and oral ulcers on July 7. He recovered without hospitalisation and his family members have no symptoms.

The boy attended a Sheung Shui childcare centre where 11 children (aged two to six, including the boy) developed symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease from July 1 to 12. None required hospitalisation or developed complications. So far, four have been confirmed EV-71 cases.

As a precaution, the centre advised the affected class on July 13 to close until the end of the school term.

The centre called on people to guard against infection and maintain good personal and environmental hygiene.
