First batch of frozen ducks pass virus tests

Some 9,510 frozen imported Mainland ducks have passed tests for avian influenza. They are the first two consignments since the suspension of Mainland poultry meat imports on January 30.

The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department said samples were collected from each consignment upon arrival at Man Kam To today for rapid screening tests for the H5 virus. Laboratory results confirmed all samples were virus-free.

The department has processed applications for frozen and chilled poultry imports since March 11. Frozen duck imports resumed today after Mainland authorities were satisfied with the control measures taken by farms and plants to prevent the virus.

The ducks have been released for sale.
