Family services review panel ready soon

*
Social Welfare Department

The three members of an independent panel will be appointed next week to review the existing mechanism on provision of family services, Director of Social Welfare Paul Tang says.

The review, prompted by the recent family tragedy in Tin Shui Wai, will cover the provision, handling and co-ordination of family services. The panel will offer suggestions to further improve the services in six-month's time.

Speaking on radio talkshows today, Mr Tang stressed the review aims at seeking improvements.

Separately, the department has commissioned HK University to review its tool for assessing cases on family services.

He believes co-operation from all parties, including the abused, is the key to making the services more effective.

Spending cuts won't affect services

On resources, Mr Tang reiterated that spending cuts will not affect the department's services, and staff redeployment will facilitate better use of resources.

The department has redeployed manpower to cater for the needs of different districts. For Tin Shui Wai, the number of integrated family services centers will be increased from two to three early next year, with the number of caseworkers going up from 28 to 41.

The department will continue its close co-operation with Police and non-government organisations to help people in need.
