The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department today reminded the public and poultry stall operators that Thursday will be the first Rest Day for this month.
The Rest Day has been advanced from February 10 as one of the precautionary measures against avian influenza and to protect public health.
The decision was made at a meeting held between Government officials, Legislative Councillor Wong Yung-kan and representatives of the poultry industry.
Operators can continue to sell their live poultry that morning as the Rest Day starts at noon to make way for cleansing and disinfection.
All operators must strictly observe Rest Day conditions. Failure to comply will lead to immediate cancellation of licences or termination of tenancies.
Publicity stepped up
The department has stepped up publicity to educate the public and the poultry trade on the importance of taking precautionary measures against avian influenza.
They include:
* poster displays reminding customers to wash their hands thoroughly and immediately after purchasing live poultry; and,
* distribution of booklets to poultry shop operators on protective measures against avian-related diseases.
