The Department of Health has been informed by the Guangdong Health Bureau of another suspected SARS case in Guangdong.
Consultant in Community Medicine Dr Thomas Tsang said the patient is a 35-year-old man who has not visited Hong Kong recently and is now isolated in a hospital.
Guangdong authorities are investigating the case to learn whether the patient contracted the disease from a person or an animal.
The department is maintaining close communication with Guangdong authorities and is watching developments carefully.
The Hospital Authority has been informed of the case so its frontline staff can adopt appropriate precautions, Dr Tsang said, adding that the Government has stepped up border health measures.
People, especially travellers, are urged to observe good personal and environmental hygiene.
Recent travellers to Guangdong who have fever or symptoms of respiratory tract infection should consult their doctors immediately.
