New features to improve audible traffic signal
*
Transport Department

To enhance the electronic audible traffic signal that is used to help visually impaired people to cross the road safely, the Transport Department is testing a number of new features.

The department arranged an on-site testing of the signal's performance for blind associations and visually impaired people this morning in Sham Shui Po.  It received valuable views and suggestions.

Three new features tested on site included:

* four different tones;

* the effect of lowering the speaker unit; and

* the effect of slotted openings on both sides of the speaker unit.

Since the project began early this year, most of the blind organisations and visually impaired people have been in support of the project while others were against it.

To address their concern, the department arranged for representatives of blind organisations and visually impaired people to attend on-site testings to learn how to improve the system.

The department promised to continue working closely with the related organisations on improvements to the project and to maintain dialogue with them.
