Department of Health

The Department of Health today confirmed an imported case of Dengue fever involving a 42-year-old woman who developed fever, headache, joint pain and a rash on August 19.

The patient did not need hospitalisation and has already recovered. She had been in a Southeast Asian country August 14-18.

So far this year, all 35 cases of Dengue fever reported in Hong Kong have been imported.

The department said public alertness on the threat of Dengue fever and their active participation in anti-mosquito efforts are essential to prevent the illness.

People are reminded to take the following measures to prevent mosquito bites:

* Put all used cans and bottles into covered dustbins;

* Change plant water at least once a week;

* Leave no water in saucers beneath flower pots;

* Cover tightly all water containers, wells and water storage tanks; and,

* Ensure all drains are not blocked.

They should also take the following precautionary measures when travelling abroad:

* Wear long-sleeved clothes and long trousers;

* Use insect repellent over exposed parts of the body; and,

* Use mosquito screens or nets when the room is not air-conditioned.
