Shopping for views: Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong visited markets to hear what stall operators had to say about the management and new hygiene control measures. |
Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong toured Luen Wo Hui Market in Fanling and Kwong Yuen Estate Market in Sha Tin to hear stall tenants' views on the markets' management.
Luen Wo Hui Market was opened in 2002 following the redevelopment of the former 50-year-old market that had stood in its place. The Government has earmarked more than $300 million for improvement works to 30 markets under the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department's supervision.
Improvements will include upgrades of ventilation and drainage systems, replacing floor and wall finishes, better lighting and escalators. The enhancements aim to boost the markets' hygiene standards, food safety and operating environment.
"We shall continue to listen to views of the tenants and consumers in proceeding with the improvement works," Dr Yeoh said.
He also met health inspectors, hawker control team members, cleaning staff and pest control staff in the Luen Wo Hui Complex.
Enforcement officers described the implementation issues of the increased fixed penalty for public cleanliness offences since June this year, while Dr Yeoh expressed his appreciation for the active participation of cleansing and pest control staff in the fight against SARS.
