Help centres for pathological gamblers to open

*

A three-year trial scheme to run two remedial centres for pathological gamblers will be launched by the Government in October.

Speaking on a radio talk show this morning, Principal Assistant Secretary for Home Affairs Esther Leung said both centres will cost about $7 million to run each year.

A total of 20 non-government organisations have submitted proposals on running the centres.

Ms Leung said the organisations that will run the centres are required to provide training to their staff on gambling culture in Hong Kong. The Government expects that the two centres will find the best way to help pathological gamblers.

Moreover, the Government will set up a fund to support the study on the city's gambling activities, provide assistance to pathological gamblers and enhance public education and publicity on the issue.

Ms Leung said a webpage will be set up on HK Education City's website to enhance youngsters' awareness of the issue. The Education & Manpower Bureau will also assist teachers in instilling a correct attitude in students.
