A 77-year-old Hong Kong woman has contracted SARS and is in stable condition receiving treatment in a Guangzhou hospital.
The case was confirmed by Guangdong health authorities today.
The woman arrived in Guangzhou around noon on June 3. Later in the day, she developed a fever and was admitted to hospital.
As a precautionary measure, her six close contacts in Hong Kong were put under confinement and none developed symptoms.
The Department of Health's record revealed that the woman was an in-patient of North District Hospital where she was treated for another illness May 20 and 21, during which a SARS patient had been staying in the same ward.
The department conducted health checks on the woman until June 1. She developed no SARS symptoms throughout the surveillance period.
