Hikers alerted on safety codes

Safety first: The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department has launched the Code for Visiting Geosites in Hong Kong.

The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department has launched the Code for Visiting Geosites in Hong Kong to advise people on hiking safety.

Hikers should check weather conditions and plan their route carefully before setting out. Never hike alone, and bring an experienced guide. Tell family or friends your planned hiking route.

Hikers should wear suitable hiking shoes, hats and clothes, and also take gloves, first-aid kits and weather-proof clothes. They should take precautions against heatstroke and drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

They should remain alert to changes in the surrounding environment and potential hazards such as shifting or slippery rocks. Hikers should not climb the rock columns or trample on severely weathered or eroded surfaces.

Avoid hiking in unstable weather conditions.

The department will hold seminars for hiking groups and tour operators in June and July to remind them to exercise caution in organising such activities. It will also post warning signs at dangerous locations.
