The Environmental Protection Department recorded 31 convictions in August for breaches of anti-pollution legislation.
Fourteen related to waste disposal, 10 to air pollution, three to noise, three to water pollution and one to ozone-layer protection.
The heaviest fine was $100,000, against a company importing controlled waste without a permit last December. About 21,900 kg of waste lead-acid batteries from Jamaica were found in a container. The hazardous waste was returned to Jamaica.
