Wet, windy and wild: Typhoon Nuri weakened into a severe tropical storm and then a tropical depression as it blew across Hong Kong and into Guangdong.

The Hong Kong Observatory cancelled all storm signals at 11:15am, as severe tropical storm Nuri weakened into a tropical depression and continued to move away from Hong Kong.

At 11am, Nuri was about 200km west-northwest of Hong Kong, near 23.3 degrees north, 112.6 degrees east. It is forecast to move west at about 16 km an hour across the western part of Guangdong.

Classes for kindergartens and children with disabilities remain suspended today. Ferry services and public transport have resumed normal service.

Storm sends many to hospitals

After signal No 8 was raised on Friday morning, 70 people sought treatment at the accident and emergency departments at public hospitals, and 19 of them were admitted. One is in critical condition, five are serious, and 13 are stable.

A male swimmer reported missing at Big Wave Bay yesterday afternoon has not yet been found. The sea search was suspended during severe weather conditions.

There were 122 requests for emergency assistance concerning fallen trees and trunks on roads, 26 reports of dangerous signs, 11 reports of fallen masonry or debris, and six reports of collapsed scaffoldings. Two people were injured when a scaffolding collapsed at Fuk Wa Street in Sham Shui Po yesterday afternoon. They were treated in hospital and released. There was also a landslip reported on Tai Po Road, and one report of minor flooding.

Flights cancelled

At the airport, 392 flights were cancelled, 104 delayed and 15 diverted.

The Home Affairs Department opened 27 temporary shelters for people in need, and nearly 400 people sought refuge in them.
