Environment head touts cleaner power production
*

Hong Kong may need more natural gas as fuel for power generation as it can offer cleaner production, cleaner air and lower emissions, Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau says.

After attending the Asia-Pacific Seminar on Geological Conservation & Sustainable Development today, Mr Yau told the media the Government is considering the need for a liquefied natural gas terminal as part of Hong Kong's infrastructure and a source to replenish China Light & Power's gas supply.

Soko Island is one of the selected sites, and it has gone through environmental assessment procedures. Mr Yau said there are other considerations, and the proposal will be presented to the Town Planning Board for consideration and public comments.

Mr Yau added the Government will work on the best mechanism for this facility, have discussions with the power company, and closely scrutinise the proposal to ensure it meets the best interests of consumers and the wider community.
