The Hong Kong Observatory has deployed a team of meteorologists to monitor weather conditions at the Olympic equestrian venues around-the-clock.
The Observatory's Assistant Director Wai Hon-gor told the media today the team will be stationed at the venues and the Observatory forecasting office from July 25 to monitor temperature, humidity, wind, rain and heat stress indexes.
The Observatory has also designed a system to measure heat load on horses by calculating the combined effects of temperature, humidity, wind and solar radiation.
Mr Wai said forecasters will issue detailed three-day weather forecasts for the competition venues four times a day. Seven-day forecasts will be provided to facilitate advance planning of the events.
The Observatory provides the Equestrian Company and Government departments with access to the weather information via an online information system.
Special weather bulletins on weather forecasts and reports for the venues will be issued to the media before each competition session from August 8.
The Equestrian Company has contingency plans for adverse weather including liaising with public transport operators and keeping ticket holders informed of any plans to delay or postpone competitions.
Mr Wai advised spectators to check the weather information and watch out for announcements by the electronic media before they start their trips to the events.
