Solar eclipse set for August 1
*
Hong Kong Observatory

A total eclipse of the sun will occur on August 1 and will be best viewed at places with unobstructed views to the east-southeast, such as Tai O and the top of Tai Mo Shan, if weather permits.

The eclipse will occur from 6.43pm to 7.03pm. A small part of the sun will be obscured by the moon during the eclipse.

People must not look directly at the sun with the naked eye or through a telescope. They should avoid observing the eclipse for a prolonged period. A safer method is to project the sun's image through a pinhole onto a piece of white paper or cardboard and view the projection. For details, click here.

The next solar eclipse observable in Hong Kong will occur on January 26 next year. It will be an annular eclipse, in which the moon covers all but a bright ring around the circumference of the sun, but will only be visible as a partial eclipse in Hong Kong.
