Total rainfall recorded at Hong Kong Observatory in June reached 1,346.1mm, breaking the previous monthly rainfall record of 1,241.1mm - in May 1889.

The accumulated rainfall since January 1 was 1,911mm, 80% above normal. The 307.1mm recorded June 7 was the fifth highest daily figure ever for the month.

June's heavy rain was associated with active southwesterlies over the south China coastal areas and Typhoon Fengshen. The storm passed to Hong Kong's east on June 24 bringing gale-force winds and heavy downpours before making landfall over eastern Shenzhen.

Only 75.5 hours of sunshine was recorded, the month's lowest. June was also cooler than usual with a mean temperature of 26.7 degrees Celsius, 1.2 degrees below the normal 27.9 figure. June 20 was the month's hottest day with a maximum of 32.9 degrees.

Other areas in the Pearl River Delta were also affected by the rain with Guangzhou and Macau seeing records of 872.7mm and 1,200.8mm. The previous highest monthly rainfall record for Guangzhou was 684mm in June 1959, while Macau saw 975.2mm in May 1972.
