Water 'good' at 17 beaches
*
Environmental Protection Department

The Environmental Protection Department has rated water quality at 17 beaches 'good' and 15 as 'fair' for this weekend, but Kadoorie Beach was downgraded to 'very poor'.

While Cheung Chau Tung Wan, Chung Hom Kok, Kiu Tsui, Lower Cheung Sha and Pui O have been upgraded from last week's 'fair' to 'good', Clear Water Bay Second, St Stephen's and Trio has been downgraded from 'good' to 'fair'.

The department attributed Kadoorie Beach's very poor water quality to the accumulated effect of heavy rainfall in the last few weeks, which flushed pollutants from the beach hinterland into the water

Seven beaches - Anglers', Approach, Ting Kau, Casam, Gemini, Hoi Mei Wan and Lido - are closed to swimmers year round because of poor water quality. People should not swim at these beaches.

Bathers should avoid swimming at beaches for up to three days after a storm or heavy rainfall.
