Waste separation programme well-received
*

About 350 buildings have signed up to the Source Separation Programme of Commercial & Industrial Waste. They include commercial and Government office buildings, shopping arcades, industrial buildings, warehouses and car parks.

Opening the Forum on Source Separation of Commercial & Industrial Waste today, Permanent Secretary for the Environment Anissa Wong said she was pleased to see the active participation of property management companies in the programme.

Launched in October the project recruits commercial and industrial buildings with "source separation" mechanisms in place that enable tenants to partake in waste recovery and recycling.

"Although recovery for commercial and industrial waste has been maintained at a relatively high level of 60% over the years, sustained economic growth is starting to induce a rise in the generation and disposal of commercial and industrial waste," Ms Wong said.

While congratulating 220 commercial and industrial buildings which received certificates at today's event, she called on everyone to support waste reduction and recovery.

"I urge for your continuous support in disseminating the message of source separation to your clients and colleagues. This will help build our joint efforts in tackling the waste problem in Hong Kong," she said.

The Environmental Protection Department has launched a new website to help the public and property management understand the programme more.
