Airing views: Permanent Secretary for the Environment Anissa Wong attends the first meeting of the Advisory Panel on the Review of Air Quality Objectives & Development of a Long-Term Air Quality Strategy.

The Environmental Protection Department says the study on air-quality objectives will be complete by 2008. A public engagement process will be launched to finalise the new objectives and the long-term strategy on air-quality management in 2009.

The Advisory Panel on the Review of Air Quality Objectives & Development of a Long-Term Air Quality Strategy held its first meeting today to discuss the work plan of the comprehensive study proposed by Ove Arup & Partners, the consultant contracted to undertake the study.

Chaired by Permanent Secretary for the Environment Anissa Wong, the panel advises the Government on the direction, approaches and methodologies of the study. It will evaluate the need and justification for revising local air-quality objectives according to the principles suggested by the World Health Organisation, taking into account local factors and considerations.

The study will examine in detail the new air-quality guidelines and tap into the findings of reviews overseas. It will provide detailed information on the required measures, their implications and available options for achieving any new air-quality objective for Hong Kong.
