The recent red tide in Hong Kong waters has fully dissipated with no fish kills reported. It was formed by the Cochlodinium sp algae, which is rare in Hong Kong and non-toxic.
The first occurrence was reported at Ma Wan on May 31. It spread to some beaches and fish culture zones. Several reports were received from June 9 to June 11 at Shek O, Turtle Cove, Stanley Bay (Tai Tam Bay) and Big Wave Bay.
The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department's phytoplankton monitoring programme will continue monitor red tide occurrences to minimise the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.
