April was cooler and drier than usual, with a mean temperature of 21.8 degrees Celsius, 0.4 degrees below normal, and 125.5mm of rain, 22% below normal.
Accumulated rainfall for the first four months of the year was 189.6mm, about 37% below the usual 299.8mm for the same period.
A cold front moved across the coast of Guangdong on April 2, bringing squally showers and thunderstorms. The temperature dropped to 12.3 degrees on the morning of April 4, the lowest for the month.
A maritime air-stream set in on April 14 and brought a few light rain patches. It was warm and sunny on the next two days, and temperatures rose to 29.4 degrees on April 16, the highest for the month.
A squall line swept across Hong Kong on April 17, bringing severe gusts and heavy showers. Peak gusts of more than 100kph were recorded in some places. In Admiralty, three people were injured when a signboard collapsed.
Under the influence of a trough of low pressure over southern China, the Red Rainstorm Warning was issued for the first time this year on April 24. More than 70mm of rain was recorded over Hong Kong Island, Tseung Kwan O, Sha Tin and the northern part of the New Territories.
Only one tropical cyclone occurred in the western North Pacific in the month.
