Reasonable discussion urged on railway fares

Voice of reason: Secretary for the Environment, Transport & Works Dr Sarah Liao urges the public and lawmakers to discuss the railway fare issue in a reasonable manner.

Secretary for the Environment, Transport & Works Dr Sarah Liao has urged the public and lawmakers to discuss the railway fare issue in a reasonable manner, adding that everyone should respect the adjustment mechanism.

She hopes the railway merger can be implemented as soon as possible as it will improve service quality and route planning.

Speaking after the Strategic Development Commission meeting this afternoon, Dr Liao said members discussed ways to improve Hong Kong's environment. Although they agreed with the Government's existing policies, they also advised that co-operation with authorities in the Pearl River Delta Region should be enhanced.

Dr Liao said the Government is preparing to draft a law requiring people to turn off idling car engines. The Government will consult the public, hoping a social consensus can be reached on the arrangement.
