23 pollution convictions recorded in December

The Environmental Protection Department recorded 23 convictions in December for breaches of anti-pollution legislation.

 

Sixteen were for air pollution, five for waste disposal, one for noise control, and one for water pollution.

 

The heaviest fine in December was $30,000, assessed against a person that discharged substandard liquid livestock waste.

 

A person who exported controlled waste without a permit and failed to engage the service of a waste collector was sentenced to six months in prison for each offence, to run concurrently, suspended for two years.

 

Another person who exported controlled waste without a permit and failed to engage the service of a waste collector was given an effective sentence of 200 hours of community service.
