Lam Chiu-ying addreses the meeting participants

Meteorological meeting: Hong Kong Observatory Director Lam Chiu-ying addresses delegates attending the World Weather Information Service meeting in Hong Kong.

The World Weather Information Service will be enhanced to host meteorological data in more languages, the Hong Kong Observatory says.

A three-day meeting is being held in Hong Kong to enhance co-operation between the hosts of the website's various language versions.

The meeting includes representatives from the Mainland, Spain, Oman, Macau, Hong Kong and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Secretariat. They agreed the website should feature data in more languages.

Opening the meeting today, Hong Kong Observatory Director Lam Chiu-ying said: "The success of this project is the result of close collaboration between WMO members all working towards the common goal of providing quality weather services to the global community. We hope to better co-ordinate the development of the various language versions of the service to benefit as many people as possible."

Launched in 2005, the website gives weather forecasts for 1,146 cities and carries online climatological data for 1,167 cities. Initially in English, it now has Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese and Spanish versions.
