Cheung Sha Beach to be restored
*

About $2 million will be spent on restoring Upper Cheung Sha Beach, which has lost a large volume of sand.

Secretary for Home Affairs Dr Patrick Ho today told lawmakers large waves whipped up by Typhoon Prapiroon in August swept away the sand.

The situation is serious, he said, as the concrete foundation of the beach building and submerged rocks have been exposed. The beach's width has diminished about three metres, while the sand layer has fallen by about 150 centimetres. Some beach facilities were also damaged by the typhoon.

The Civil Engineering & Development Department will conduct small-scale restoration works within the beach area from January to March. They include adding marine sand to the beach area and the beach access, and removing stones. The Architectural Services Department will conduct other restoration work during the winter.
