Senior appointment: Senior Scientific Officer Shun Chi-ming (right) will assist president Carr McLeod (centre) with training in aeronautical meteorology.

Hong Kong Observatory Senior Scientific Officer Shun Chi-ming has been elected Vice President of the Commission for Aeronautical Meteorology of the World Meteorological Organisation.

It is the first time an observatory officer has been tapped for a senior position in the organisation.

Mr Shun will support newly elected President Carr McLeod to lead the expert teams the commission establishes in aeronautical meteorology training, developing a new terminal weather forecast, and customer relations.

Since joining the observatory in 1986, Mr Shun has worked in weather forecasting, radiation monitoring and numerical weather prediction. Since 1993, he has specialised in aeronautical meteorology and helped install the Terminal Doppler Weather Radar for wind-shear detection at Hong Kong International Airport.
