New law protects more endangered species

The Protection of Endangered Species of Animals & Plants Ordinance will extend protection to more endangered species such as humphead wrasse, certain freshwater turtles and agarwood, says the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department.

Coming into force today, the new law was made to comply with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna & Flora. It regulates the import, export, re-export or possession of endangered species by a licensing system, and will simplify the fee structure.

The department said, in general, existing and potential licence holders will find themselves paying less under the new system.
