Water talk: Professor Ho Kin-chung (left) is briefed on the operation of the Shenzhen Reservoir. |
Dongjiang water quality has improved greatly since the sealed aqueduct to deliver water began operation in 2003. This was the message today from the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on the Quality of Water Supplies, Professor Ho Kin-chung.
Completing a two-day study visit to Dongjiang water-supply facilities in Guangdong, Professor Ho said he is satisfied with improvement works done by provincial authorities at the Dongjiang catchment zone. Treatment works in upstream areas have helped cut the source of river pollution, aiding the conservation of water flowing to the Shenzhen Reservoir.
The delegation met officials from the Guangdong and Shenzhen water authorities. They said 36 more treatment works will be built in the province, and an integrated administration department will be formed to manage and supervise Dongjiang water quality.
He also said the committee members concur that managing tariffs helps conserve Hong Kong's water resources by reducing wastage. However, adjustments should be left to the Water Supplies Department to determine.
