Automatic visibility meter on trial

automatic visibility meter

On air: The automatic visibility meter in Central will monitor conditions over Victoria Harbour around-the-clock.

The Hong Kong Observatory has installed a meter in Central that monitors visibility on Victoria Harbour. The real time data is available on the Observatory's website on a trial basis.

Observatory Director Lam Chiu-ying said the meter will provide a more comprehensive visibility information service to the public, particularly the marine and aviation sectors.

Welcoming the iniative, Government Flying Service Captain Kelvin Shum said the data collected is of vital importance to the emergency operation of helicopters.

Traditionally, visibility monitoring of Victoria Harbour has been done by trained observers. With the increasing number of high-rise buildings obscuring such observations, there has been a need to devise a new monitoring method, resulting in the testing of the new meter.
