Hong Kong Observatory Director Lam Chiu-ying says he will listen carefully to public opinions on the typhoon numbering system and consider them when the system is reviewed later this year.
Speaking on a radio talk show today, Mr Lam said his priority is to protect public safety and all decisions made strictly follow guidelines.
He said the decision to not issue the No.8 signal was made purely on scientific data. Public criticism of the decision is understandable, he said, as the wind speed in different districts may have varied.
"As a civil servant, it is natural to face criticism and you should listen carefully to these views," he added.
The observatory will review the assessment criteria used in the warning signals. But he said any changes will have a social cost and should balance the interests of various quarters.
